Kashmir, with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, offered a compelling setting for a story about second chances and the enduring power of love.

Through Sharmila and George’s journey, I hope readers find encouragement in the belief that it’s never too late for love to find its way back into our lives. Their story is a testament to the idea that amidst loss and change, there’s always a possibility for renewal and joy.
3. As an esteemed figure in food writing and storytelling, what do you believe sets your work apart, particularly in the realm of culinary storytelling?
My narrative style is deeply rooted in the belief that food is a universal language that transcends borders and cultures, serving as a great vessel for storytelling. What sets my work apart is, I believe, the way I blend the rich, diverse flavors of Indian cuisine with the intricate tapestries of human experiences, creating a journey that nourishes the soul. Each recipe, each dish woven into my narratives, carries with it stories of love, longing, and the intimate bonds that food can forge among people.
4. The “Kiss of Kashmir” dish inspired by your novel has been introduced at Michelin star chef Vikas Khanna’s restaurant, The Bungalow. How does it feel to have your literary work inspire culinary innovation in such a prestigious setting?
Having the “Kiss of Kashmir” dish inspired by my novel featured in Chef Vikas Khanna’s restaurant is a profound honor. It’s exhilarating to see the fusion of literature and cuisine manifest in such a prestigious setting, bridging the worlds of storytelling and gastronomy.
5. Your book portrays the region of Kashmir with vivid imagery and detail. What kind of research did you undertake to ensure an accurate portrayal of the culture, traditions, and landscape of Kashmir?
To accurately depict Kashmir, I undertook extensive research, including studying its history, culture, and traditions, and engaging with people who have a deep connection to the region and of course so many Kashmiri’s in Sri Nagar who aided with the research. My aim was to honor the beauty and complexity of Kashmir, ensuring that its portrayal was respectful, accurate, and deeply felt, thus allowing readers to experience its culture, traditions, and landscapes as vividly as possible.
6. Your journey from engineering to becoming an acclaimed author and food writer is quite remarkable. Can you share with us some insights into your transition and what motivates you to continue exploring different creative avenues?
My transition from engineering to writing was driven by a deep-seated passion for storytelling and exploring different cultures through their cuisines. What motivates me is the endless joy and fulfillment found in creating and sharing stories that resonate with people, bridging differences and celebrating our shared humanity. This shift was less about leaving something behind and more about moving towards a calling that resonated with my soul.

The most challenging part of writing “A Kiss in Kashmir” was ensuring that the narrative authentically represented the complex history and beauty of Kashmir without overshadowing the personal journeys of the characters. Balancing the backdrop with the intimate stories of love and hope required careful consideration.

To those embarking on the literary path, remember that writing is an act of courage and a leap of faith. Embrace your unique voice and perspectives, for they are your most powerful tools. Literature and food writing, in particular, is about connecting with others through the stories we tell and the meals we share. Stay true to your passions, be persistent, and always write from a place of authenticity and love.
