India Celebrates its 70th Republic Day

The colorful images of the cultural diversity, the valor of the military forces and the proud achievements of the country were unfolded before the nation during the 70th Republic Day celebrations which had South Africa president Cyril Ramaphosa as the chief guest for the first time in its history. Thousands of spectators gathered around the Rajpath watching the spectacular Republic Day Parade showcasing India’s unity in diversity. The national capital was covered with a fool proof security blanket offering a high hawks vigil in and around the Rajpath area.

Minutes before the Parade began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the brave soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti along with the three heads of Indian Armed Forces. The parade began shortly after the arrival of Vice President Sri Venkaiah Naidu and arrival of President of India, Sri Ram Nath Kovind along with the chief guest Cyril Ramaphosa and his wife. The National flag was hoisted by the President of India and the playing of the national anthem was followed by the customary 21 gun salute. Before the commencement of the parade, the brave soldiers were facilitated with gallantary awards and Ashok Chakra was awarded to Nazir Wani’s wife by the President of India. President Cyril Ramaphosa was seated next to the President Ram Nath Kovind.

The two leaders chatted and enjoyed the annual spectacle. On many occasions a smiling South Africa President was seen nodding in appreciation during the conversation. The theme of the Republic Day celebration was ‘Gandhi’ as India celebrates his 150th birth anniversary in 2019. 16 tableau from states and 6 from ministries took part in the parade based on theme Gandhi. M777 Howitzer & K9 – Vajra – T guns were also showcased in the parade which were recently inducted in Indian Army. It was first time in the history than an all women contingent of Assam Rifles took part in the parade and it was also first time when an all men Army Services Corps was led by a woman officer, Bhawana Kasturi.
