Dev Banerjee – A self-taught photographer
“Art implies control of reality, for reality itself possesses no sense of the aesthetic. Photography becomes art when certain control are applied” Ansel Adams
Dev Banerjee, a self-taught photographer, attempts to capture the stories of the myriad moods of the mundane and the vastness of the unbound. His diverse family background comprising of musicians, performing artists and travellers have had a positive influence on his style as a photographer. Dev Banerjee is primarily recognized for his experimental freestyle black and white Fine Art Photography; ‘Fine art photography which is about the artist, it is not about capturing what the camera sees, it is about capturing what the artist sees, the artist uses the camera as one more tool to create a work of art’
Dev Banerjee held his recent exhibition titled “ Free-form” at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, where Dev Banerjee express the process of seed grow into trees.
…he wasn’t a tree.
Once upon a time he was just a seed, then one day his indominable urge to meet the Sun pushed him out as a tiny little spec on Earth…and he grew. Nurtured by the rays of the Sun, the fragrant rains and the magical potions hidden in the soil. And one day he asked “ But why am I so rooted”…
The great old spirit of the forest whispered in the breeze … “It is because you are rooted, you will grow. And grow you shall – into a majestic being. Every twist and turn in your trunk, every myriad hue in your leaves, every freckle on your bark shall tell your story…and only your story it will be. For each one of us is a free spirit and each one of us our own free-form.
Then one day, when the time is ripe, the West wind, the sublime stream and the birds will carry the seeds of your fruit and plant them in faraway lands and woods enveloped in perfumed fog – and an extension of you shall grow there to tell another story, again. Isn’t that beautiful…”
“…remember, no two of us will ever be alike – but we belong to the same family. We share every piece of Earth with everyone. There is no us and them. Together we nurture, provide and show our gratitude to our home – to this ancient planet.
…and then, he became a tree
Dev Banerjee photographs also received honours from World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, organised by “Connect2Earth” in 2008 and from National Geographic three years consecutively and he held numbers of exhibitions.
