When thinking of a road trip in the UAE, the capital city of Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah are often the first ideas of destinations. However, if you are looking for something a little more relaxed and away from the hustle and bustle, then the emirate of Fujairah is certainly worth a visit. Only 90 minutes from Dubai, it is a worthwhile drive to see a different side of what the UAE has to offer.
Bull Butting and the Corniche
One of the more unique events going around, Bull Butting is held every Friday in the late afternoon (4 o’clock to be exact) that draws the attention from locals and visitors alike. Located on the Corniche, it is a tradition introduced to the Emirati’s from the Portuguese and is an event for the whole family to see. Bull Butting is basically owners bringing their biggest bull to show off their strength against other owners. The winning bulls increase in value every week but be careful, make sure you stay not too close from the bulls as you have the feeling like they will charge you!
Visit the Sheikh Zayed Mosque
The second biggest of its kind in the United Arab Emirates behind the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque located in Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Fujairah is certainly a sight you cannot miss. Being over 100m high and being able to pack in over 30,000 worshippers, the mosque has become a major landmark within the city, with its spires towering over surrounding buildings. However, the only way you will be able to see the inside is if you are a Muslim, as Non-Muslims are unable to go inside. The outside facade alone is worth the visit for very “instagrammable” shots!
Visit the Oldest Mosque of the UAE
Located approximately 30 minutes north of the city, the Al Bidhya Mosque and Fort has a strong significance in the history of the United Arab Emirates. It is rumored to be the very first mosque built in the UAE and is famous for its advanced architecture with the prayer area pointing to the Mecca. Scientists have found that the surrounding area of the Fort and mosque has been occupied for over 4000 years, with a huge cemetery also recently discovered. You will need a car to get here from Fujairah City but the road is along the coast and is a great way to see all the towns with the mountains towering one side and the beach on the other.
Fujairah Museum and Fort
In the heart of Fujairah, the Fort gives you a great view of the city and the chance to learn about Emirati culture and traditions. Originally built in 1670, the fort has withstood constant attacks over the years and has been restored several times. The Fujairah Fort is part of the Heritage Village, which includes the Museum with its artifacts, plus houses and a village that has been rebuilt to see how the Emirati’s used to live.
Go Snorkel or Dive at Snoopy Island
Located north of Fujairah City, Snoopy Island get its name from the shape resembles the famous cartoon character and is the most popular place to get your fix of quality snorkeling and diving in the UAE. Most people who come here stay in one of the luxury resorts surrounding the island, or if you are a little more adventurous, many people choose to camp on the beach to catch an incredible sunrise.
Fujairah is a unique area and is still relatively unknown by visitors and expats alike. It is a great weekend getaway and can be a part of a longer trip if you are exploring the UAE for the first time!
